Thermal and acoustic methods answer different questions. Neither is a universal water detector, and neither should be presented as proof without supporting observations. The building condition determines which method is useful and what other evidence is needed.
What thermal imaging contributes
A thermal camera maps surface temperature differences. Moisture, evaporation, moving water, insulation gaps, sunlight, HVAC, and materials can all affect those patterns. Thermal imaging can help identify an area for closer investigation, but it cannot see through a wall or identify water by itself.
Moisture readings, visual evidence, time, and building operation help interpret what the pattern means.
What acoustic methods contribute
Acoustic equipment listens for sound or vibration associated with certain leaks, especially on pressurized systems. Pipe material, pressure, background equipment, building structure, and distance can strengthen or mask a signal.
A strong acoustic indication narrows the search. It still needs to be compared with plumbing layout and other evidence.
Why combined evidence is stronger
A reliable investigation may use thermal, acoustic, moisture, visual, pressure, operating, and occupant information together. The objective is not to use every tool. It is to use enough suitable evidence to justify the next action and state the remaining uncertainty honestly.

Questions people ask
Is a blue thermal-camera area always wet?
No. Colour represents a selected temperature scale, not moisture. A cool or warm pattern needs context and, where appropriate, confirmation with other observations or instruments.
Can acoustic detection find a drain leak?
Acoustic methods are generally more useful for certain pressurized-line conditions. Intermittent drains, roofs, and envelope leaks may require different testing and observations.
Why might selective access still be needed?
Non-invasive evidence can narrow a source, but concealed materials may prevent direct confirmation or repair. Focused access may be the most responsible next step once the evidence justifies it.
