Stain or drip
A stain is a record. A drip is still a live event.
Not every brown mark is an emergency. Waiting on a stain that is still spreading, though, lets water keep moving through insulation and electrical boxes.
Check whether the area is still changing.
A stain that grows, darkens, or feels cold and soft is not finished. A drip, even a slow one, is active water.
A hard, unchanged mark that has been photographed for weeks may be a past event. It can still hide damp material behind the paint.
Do not paint over it to ‘see if it comes back’.
Paint hides the timeline. Photograph the mark with a date, then get the building to record it. If it returns, you have a comparison instead of a guess.
